I have written about couples counselling and premarital counselling elsewhere on this website. Both are excellent services which can provide a rich vein of support for couples. However, the very nature of couples counselling means it can be difficult for couples to ‘open up’ with each other, particularly in front of a counsellor – someone they have probably never met before. It goes without saying that choosing the right counsellor is crucial for counselling to be a success.
So, what if you don’t want to ‘open up’ in front of your partner or, indeed, in front of a complete stranger. Some people who consider counselling, whether this is couples or individual, are vulnerable, some have real anger issues, are hurt and desperate for happiness to come back into their life. Quite often they can feel the focus is on them and not the relationship. And some would rather remain anonymous rather than spill their issues in front of a complete stranger. Well, there is a third way, as a certain former UK Prime Minister once said. There is online counselling - and this can be done for couples as well as individuals. And there are so many online tools such as Skype now available for such a service.
Like any other service, including face-to-face counselling, the starting point for online counselling is conducting some research. Explore what’s available via internet search engines. Visit different websites and see what they have to offer, remembering that old adage if it sounds too good to be true it usually is. Check customer reviews for each of the sites you visit, bearing in mind that it isn’t beyond the realms of possibility that some of the more glowing reviews may be fictious.
Once you identify a suitable site then choose the counselling programme that you think is the best for you and your partner. Naturally, you make this decision together. It would be rather pointless in doing the programme if one of you isn’t happy at what’s on offer. Reputable online counselling programmes are designed by counsellors themselves and can prove very successful in an age where many people feel uncomfortable speaking about their problems. It’s an irony that in the age of instant communication with the internet, laptops, tablets and smart phones, many people prefer to text, or email rather than actually converse with someone. How many people at your place of work, for example, will email you from the desk across from you rather than speak?
One of the benefits of online counselling is that it can be done from the comfort of your own home. No need to traipse halfway across town to see a face-to-face counsellor, struggling to find a car parking space or risk running late because the bus hasn’t turned up. No need to venture out on a cold winter’s morning or battle the wind and driving rain (which, in Scotland, is a regular occurrence!)
Do your research. Find out which online counselling service best fits your needs (and there are many of them so be patient!) Find out more about the service and get customer feedback if you can before you proceed. Like everything else in life, preparation is the key to achieving your goal.
